Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement.
